Public invited to meeting to beautify U.S. 41 in Apollo Beach

Apollo Beach, Florida -- Hillsborough County invites the public to attend an introductory open house on the proposed U.S. 41 zoning overlay district.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss creating a zoning overlay district along U.S. 41 between Big Bend Road and the Little Manatee River as part of implementing the Apollo Beach and Ruskin Community Plans.

The overlay district will not affect the current zoning of properties, but will address establishing standards to improve and enhance the physical appearance of the U.S. 41 corridor. Standards typically address landscaping, signage, architecture and site design.

Hillsborough Public Transportation Commission meets this week

Tampa, Florida -- Hillsborough County's Public Transportation Commission will hold its regular meeting Wednesday, May 11 at 9 a.m. in the 2nd Floor Boardroom of County Center, 601 E. Kennedy Blvd. in downtown Tampa.

This group regulates the operation of taxicabs, limousines, vans, handicabs, wreckers and basic life support ambulances in Hillsborough County. 

People have applied for a certificate to drive a limo or taxicab and have been denied appear in front of the commission and often ask for waivers.

South Tampa, Florida - A major water main break has closed the intersection of Bayshore Boulevard and Gandy Boulevard.

The water main break happened Monday afternoon and left water rushing across the street. The pressure from the break lifted the asphalt in some areas of the roadway and left gaping holes in others.

Monday evening, Elias Franco, a spokesman for the Tampa Water Department, said 17 addresses in the area were still without water.

Tampa, FL -- Average retail gasoline prices in Tampa rose 0.8 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.87/g yesterday.

This compares with the national average that has fallen 0.8 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.93/g, according to gasoline price website TampaGasPrices.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Tampa during the past week, prices yesterday were $1.04/g higher than the same day one year ago and are 15.5 cents per gallon higher than a month ago.

The national average has increased 19.4 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 100.0 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago.

Old U.S. Hwy. 41 bridge in Riverview closed

Riverview, Florida - The Hillsborough County Public Works Department has closed the Old U.S. Highway 41A Bridge over Archie Creek until further notice as a result of an inspection that found the small bridge is structurally deficient.

The closure is from Burts Road to the Mosaic facility located on the road.

Old U.S. Highway 41A in Riverview is an industrial road that isn't used much by the public, but is primarily used by trucks traveling to industrial facilities on the road. Old U.S. Highway 41A branches off of U.S. Highway 41 and is between Bloomingdale Avenue and Riverview Drive.

New Tampa bridge construction

A bridge linking New Tampa Blvd to Commerce Park Blvd could be under construction before too long.

Tampa City Council approved $12.4 million dollars for the project to stretch over I-75 and link the two boulevards.  Construction might begin as early as June.

The new bridge would be built to accommodate up to four lanes of traffic.

Tampa, FL -- The Florida Highway Patrol will be hosting a multi-agency Comprehensive Roadside Safety, DL, Tag, DUI and Equipment Inspection Checkpoint on Friday, April 29 beginning at 8 p.m.

The Florida Highway Patrol, in conjunction with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office and Temple Terrace Police Department, is working to create a safe driving environment for motorists and pedestrians through a zero tolerance, specifically targeted and assertive traffic enforcement program that focuses on DUI enforcement in an effort to combat drinking and driving offenses that continue to claim lives each year throughout the Tampa Bay area.
