Tampa, Florida- Last month, we told you about a Delta flight that lost contact with the control tower while attempting to land at Tampa International Airport. The plane was forced to circle above the airport while the pilot communicated with approach controllers who were also trying to radio the tower.

It was nearly 3:00 before an FAA manager finally reached the control tower by telephone and notified the bewildered controller that Delta flight 1129 had been calling in trying to land. The flight initiated a missed approach and landed safely on the second try.

Tampa, FL -- The Temple Terrace Police Department is hosting a multiagency Comprehensive Roadside Safety Checkpoint this Friday night, May 27 starting at 10 p.m.

The checkpoint location will be on 56th Street, just north of Fowler Avenue.

The safety effort will include the Temple Terrace Police Department, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, Florida Highway Patrol and the University of South Florida Police Department.

The goal of Friday night’s checkpoint is to reduce the number of alcohol-related crashes, injuries and fatalities on Florida roadways by conducting high-visibility enforcement operations and increasing public awareness of the state’s DUI-related incidents.

Plant City, FL -- Dr. MLK Jr. Blvd. (SR 574) is about to get a facelift.

A new five foot sidewalk will be added on the north side of the road between Forbes Road and Turkey Creek Road and on the south side of the road between Charles Wilkinson Lane and Turkey Creek Road.

The project is being headed by Better Roads, Inc. on behalf of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).

In addition, the contractor will replace the traffic signals and poles with new hurricane resistant signals and poles at Forbes Road.

The hot local topic of connecting New Tampa Blvd. in West Meadows to Commerce Park Blvd via a bridge over I-75 has cleared the last obstacle.

Tampa City Council awarded the contract to build the bridge to Prince Contracting, LLC. at a price of $12.4 million. 

The bridge will maintain a single lane road status but will be built to accommodate lane expansion in the future if necessary. 

This new connection will also have a bike path, planters and landscaping along with artwork created by the winners of a contest held at Wharton High in 2002.

Getting to Lightning playoff games made easier by HART

Tampa, Florida -- Getting to the Tampa Bay Lightning playoff games at the St. Pete Times Forum in downtown Tampa will be easier because of Hillsborough Area Regional Transportation, HART.

HART will operate extended hours of service for the TECO Line Streetcar System during Tampa Bay Lightning play-off game nights, beginning with tonight's game. This extended schedule means the streetcar system will operate until play-off games end.

The Tampa Historic Streetcar Board voted  Wednesday on extending regular streetcar service, which will provide Lightning game fans with more parking options and more connectivity between Ybor City and Downtown Tampa. Game fans may park at Ybor City, and ride the streetcar to and from the St. Pete Times Forum.

Road work ahead in Plant City

Plant City -- It's become a way of life in Florida if you drive around town. Expansions and resurfacing projects will force some road closures over the weekend and part of next week in Plant City.

The I-4 resurfacing from Branch Forbes Road to Memorial Boulevard will close down some roads during the weekend.

According to the Florida Department of Transportation I-4 interchange  ramps may be closed for paving between 8 p.m. and 6a.m. Friday May 20 and Sunday May 22 - Thursday May 26.

Some of the interchanges may include Branch Forbes Road (Exit 17), Thonotosassa Road/ SR 566 (Exit 19), Alexander Street/ SR 39 (Exit 21), Park Road (Exit 22) and County Line Road (Exit 25).

Tampa, FL -- According to TampaGasPrices.com, average retail gasoline prices in Tampa have fallen 2.3 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.84/g yesterday.

This compares with the national average that has increased 0.3 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.93/g, according to gasoline price website TampaGasPrices.com.
