Expect gas prices to fall again

Expect gas prices to fall again

Tampa, FL -- Oil rose slightly last week after reports showed U.S. manufacturing increased in the month of June, when it was forecast fall, according to AAA Auto Club South.

The U.S. manufacturing index climbed to 55.3 in June from 53.5 in May, when it was expected to drop to 52.

As a result, the price of crude oil settled Friday at $94.94 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange—$3.78 more than the week prior.

Although U.S. manufacturing numbers were positive, China's were the opposite with slowed economic growth in the country. China is the second largest oil-consuming country and a decrease in their manufacturing gauge will most likely push oil prices lower this week.

Platt Street bridge to close in October

Platt Street bridge to close in October

Tampa, FL -- In early October, the 84-year-old Platt Street Bridge in downtown Tampa will close for maintenance and repairs.

Drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians who use this Bridge are encouraged to start identifying detour routes around the Bridge, as the construction is expected to cause rush hour delays.

Ongoing work has closed lanes of the Platt Street Bridge since January 2011.  However, to allow the contractor to open the drawbridge and perform replacement work on its components, the entire Bridge is scheduled to be closed for 105 days, starting in October.

During this second phase, the work will shift to the southern (right-hand) lanes of the bridge. The lane shift will be completed by the evening of July 1.

The southernmost lane and sidewalk will be closed until October, with additional intermittent closures of a second lane as needed between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Crosswalks will be marked to channel pedestrians to the sidewalk on the north side of the Platt Street Bridge. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the navigable waterway under the Bridge will remain open during the entire project.

Release of oil reserves causes drop on oil prices this week

Release of oil reserves causes drop on oil prices this week

Tampa, FL -- Last week, the International Energy Agency (IEA) announced the release of 60 million barrels of oil into the market, according to AAA Auto Club South.  The U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve will provide 30 million barrels, while the remaining barrels will come from other countries.

The decision was made after OPEC failed to come to any agreements at their June 8 meeting to increase productions quotas to help alleviate high oil prices and make up for the loss of Libyan sweet crude.

Before the IEA made the announcement, oil prices were dropping as a result of slowed economic growth, both nationally and internationally, and Europe's debt issues.
