Armwood aiming for 3rd state championship

Armwood aiming for 3rd state championship

Seffner, FL-- The Armwood HS Hawks are out to win their 3rd state championship since 2003, when they play Tallahassee Lincoln, Saturday at 1pm.  They won in 2003 and 2004, then lost in the state final in 2005 to Tim Tebow and Nease HS.

Armwood is coming off an emotional win in the state semi-finals last Friday, when Ash Dudney kicked a 44-yard field goal as time expired.

The game will be the third in a row this weekend, in Orlando, with a Hillsborough County team playing for a state championship.  That, says Armwood's head coach, is amazing.

"There was a time we didn't think we'd ever have a team from Hillsborough County in there," said Armwood head coach Sean Callahan.  "When we won in '03, we were pretty special then.  Now here we are, 7 or 8 years later, we have 3 Hillsborough County teams in there, that all legitimately have a chance to win."

Tampa Chamber will enter Rays stadium fray

TAMPA, Florida - Hoping to break the impasse in the Rays' stadium saga, the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce voted Thursday to forge ahead with an effort to study how to build a stadium in the current economic climate.

"You can kind of get away right now from location," said chairman Chuck Sykes, saying the board wasn't advocating a Tampa location. "We don't think that's the way to approach it right now. We think we need to look more at finances."

Sykes was also a member of the ABC Coalition, which was cut-off from the municipality that created it after it began to explore the possibility of a stadium outside of St. Petersburg.

Hedman's SO goal pushes Lightning past Thrashers

Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Victor Hedman scored in the fourth round of the shootout to give the Tampa Bay Lightning a 2-1 win over the Atlanta Thrashers at St. Pete Times Forum.

After the first three rounds went scoreless, Hedman skated in and snapped a wrister into the left side past Ondrej Pavelec. Evander Kane then tried to sneak a shot between the pads of Mike Smith, but the goaltender came up with the save for the win.

"Last game we had a shootout, he was just looking at me with those eyes," said Lightning head coach Guy Boucher, on Hedman.   "Usually, whatever league I was in, I always choose those guys because when guys go they have a tendency to be scared. Whoever they are, and when guys looks at you like that, they want it. And it usually works out."

Sean Bergenheim had the lone goal in regulation while Smith stopped 27 shots for the Lightning, who have won two straight.

Sport fishermen challenge grouper ban

Sport fishermen challenge grouper ban

TAMPA, Florida (AP) -- A sport fishermen's group is asking a federal judge to block a six-month ban on gag grouper fishing in the Gulf of Mexico imposed by the U.S. government.

The Fishing Rights Alliance filed a lawsuit in federal court in Tampa on Monday to stop the action by the National Marine Fisheries Service. The six-month ban is scheduled to begin Jan. 1 and could be extended to a year if necessary.

The federal agency charged with managing fisheries says the ban is necessary to bolster the population of the gag grouper, which is valued for its white, flaky meat.

The lawsuit says the agency's data is faulty and the ban is unnecessary.

The commercial quota for the gag grouper has also been reduced.
