Tampa, FL - For the last few years, the blogosphere has been buzzing with dire predictions, most notably the claim that the ancient Maya predicted the end of the world in December 2012. This scare is only one symptom of a long-standing cultural preoccupation with the apocalypse.

Dr. Christian Wells, Associate Professor of Anthropology at USF, and a well-known scholar of ancient Maya culture, will address the subject of the ancient Maya Doomsday prophecy and "some helpful tips for surviving the end of the world."

Wimauma, Florida – Children cut the ribbon Thursday on a new charter school, honoring some 80 special guests who made it possible.

Thursday’s celebration at RCMA Leadership Academy marked the end of a fundraising campaign that began in 2008, a construction project that began in March and final touches on a cafeteria/auditorium that opened last week.

Collectively, Thursday’s honored guests had generated more than $1.5 million in donations for the project. They gathered in the new “cafetorium” for plaques and presentations by students.

Riverview, Florida -- Cooley Law School's Tampa Bay campus is holding an open house for prospective students interested in learning more about attending law school.

The Open House will take place today Friday, Nov. 16, and people can attend any time between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Cooley's Tampa Bay campus is located at 9445 Camden Field Parkway in Riverview.

FishHawk, Florida -- Relay For Life of FishHawk Team meetings are at Stowers Elementary School in Lithia.

The next meeting is Tuesday, Nov. 13.

2013 Relay For Life will be at Newsome High School in Lithia on March 23-24.

Tampa, Florida -- The University of South Florida will be honoring all those who have served in the United States military for their bravery and sacrifice in a Veterans Day Ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at 10:45 a.m. in the Marshall Student Center Amphitheatre on the Tampa campus.

Hillsborough elementary school students to compete in Science Olympics

Tampa, FL-- Let's wish Hillsborough County's's science smarties 'good luck' as they compete in the Elementary Science Olympics semi-finals at MOSI today.

Students from more than 140 schools competed in school-level competitions to determine their grade level representatives, and those winners have since been entered into today's semi-finals. 

The events include kindergarten towers, first grade aqua foil boats, second grade paper airplanes, third grade balloon racers, fourth grade marshmallow flyers, and fifth grade marble coasters.

Harlem Globetrotter to teach "ABCs of Bullying Prevention"

Tampa, FL-- Tomorrow, Hammer Harrison of the world famous Harlem Globetrotters will speak to students around the Bay area about the team’s “ABCs of Bullying Prevention” program.

Harrison will head to the Villa Madonna School, Pizzo Elementary and Citrus Park Elementary to continue the efforts of reducing bullying and violence among youth in our schools and communities.
