New community center opens in Riverview

Riverview, FL -- The Regent opens this weekend at 6437 Watson Road in Riverview.

It's a community center that took five years and millions of dollars to build.

The Regent can be rented out for special events and meetings.

Hillsborough Community College will also offer a few classes out of the facility.

Here's a photo taken today of the new mosque under construction in New Tampa on Morris Bridge Road. Construction on the new mosque began last year and the building has come a long way since the last photo I posted in July, 2010.

Code Enforcement Special Magistrate Hearing – Burglar False Alarms and Natural Resources

The Hillsborough County Code Enforcement Special Magistrate for the Enforcement of Burglar False Alarms and Natural Resources is scheduled to meet Monday, Jan. 10 at 9 a.m. in the 2nd Floor Boardroom of County Center, 601 E. Kennedy Blvd. in downtown Tampa.

The Special Magistrate is authorized to hear violations concerning all codes and ordinances of Hillsborough County in order to maintain health and safety standards.

Prescribed burn in Alafia River Nature Preserve

Lithia, Florida - The Florida Division of Forestry, in cooperation with the Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department will be conducting a prescribed burn today (Friday) at Alafia River Nature Preserve, 931 Old Welcome Road, Lithia.

The burn will last one day.

The purpose of the burn is for public safety after wildfire on-site.

Tampa, FL -- A Hillsborough County park is temporarily closed to the public starting today while the county works on ongoing enhancements to the park.

According to county officials, work on the Hillsborough County Veterans Memorial Park and the Rear Admiral LeRoy Collins, Jr. Veterans Museum, 3602 N. U.S.

Apollo Beach, FL - Hillsborough County is holding a public meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the construction of a 10,000-square-foot outdoor skateboard project in Apollo Beach.

The meeting will include concept plans, future design/planning workshops, and construction schedules. The estimated design and cost of the project is $500,000 which will be paid through Parks Impact Fees.

Public comment is welcome.

The meeting will take place at the Apollo Beach Recreation Center, 664 Golf & Sea Boulevard.

Christmas decorations banned at Florida toll plaza

Leesburg, Florida - It seems like there are signs of the holiday season just about everywhere you look. But not in one Central Florida workplace. Toll workers say they've been told to keep their decorations to themselves this year.

Lana Fontanetta, is originally from the Tampa Bay area. She's going to work in Leesburg dressed head-to-toe in the Christmas spirit. She says, "I had bells on my shoes earlier."

From the bells on her earrings to green and red hair scrunchies
it's her way of celebrating her favorite holiday. "Christmas is the biggest holiday and it means so much to me."

It's also her way of protesting her employer's latest rule. The single mother is a toll booth operator for the State of Florida and now she's been told work is no place for Christmas.
