Permit upheld for bridge connector
Permit upheld for bridge connector

Tampa, FL -- Connecting New Tampa Boulevard to Commerce Park Boulevard in Tampa Palms is a proposed bridge connector that would cross I-75 and about 2.2 acres of wetlands.

It's a polarizing issue with residents of communities near the connector predominantly opposed to the plan as it would bring increased traffic through Tampa Palms and into the West Meadows neighborhoods off New Tampa Boulevard.

In one stated appeal, it was asked to at least be postponed until it can be determined how much the widening of Bruce B. Downs opens up traffic flow through New Tampa rendering the connector bridge unnecessary.

The Hillsborough County Environmental Protection Commission voted 5 to 1 to uphold the permit to build the bridge connector citing no issues to wetlands.

The lone dissenting vote came from Victor Crist who did side with some of the appeals to not build the connector with concerns over residents' health and safety.

Proponents of the connection say it will provide some traffic congestion relief on Bruce B. Downs and provide some alternate routes to Freedom High School in Tampa Palms.
