Tampa, FL -- He's fed up and he's ready for a change. Tampa Bay's favorite elusive monkey announced on his website yesterday that he is running for mayor.

"The tax-paying citizens of Tampa have been driven bananas by the out-of-touch political establishment and want someone who will fight for them. I am the candidate voters will choose to navigate Tampa safely through this jungle of uncertainty," the Mystery Monkey said via his website.

The Mystery Monkey of Tampa Bay is campaigning through Twitter and Facebook. He has T-shirts, mugs, stickers, buttons, and even intimate apparel for supporters to don to get the word out.

Already the monkey has 154 supporters on his Monkey for Mayor Facebook page, and with a little over 80,000 fans and friends on his regular Facebook page that number may continue to grow.

The Mystery Monkey has been roaming the Bay Area for more than a year and has already received a lot of media attention for his elusive and resilient behavior towards efforts to catch him. The Colbert Report, Jimmy Kimmel, ABCNews, and the TODAY Show are just a few of the national media outlets that have covered him.

If the Mystery Monkey does actually file papers to run, he would be going up against former Hillsborough Commissioners Rose Ferlita and Ed Turanchik, former Tampa Councilman Bob Buckhorn, current council chair Tom Scott and former mayor Dick Greco.

Election day is March 1.
