Body of missing kayaker found in Ruskin

Ruskin, FL -- Hillsborough County investigators say a fisherman discovered the body of a missing kayaker Sunday afternoon around 4:30 p.m. near E.G. Simmons Park.

22-year-old Jerry Knight had been kayaking Saturday with a friend, 31-year-old Wes Powell, when his friend said he was unable to continue.

A Hillsborough County marine unit found Powell aboard his kayak tied to a buoy south of Gadsden Point about 2:50 p.m. Saturday. That's when the Coast Guard was alerted that Knight had been separated from his friend.

Tampa, FL-- Senior wide receiver Andre Davis from state champion Jefferson High School has orally committed to USF.


He made his decision after an official weekend visit to USF, and he announced it on his Facebook page Sunday.


"The feeling is undescribable," Davis said.  "I just can't wait to get in there and work hard with my new family.  We're on our way to big things in the Big East."

New community center opens in Riverview

New community center opens in Riverview

Riverview, FL -- The Regent opens this weekend at 6437 Watson Road in Riverview.


It's a community center that took five years and millions of dollars to build.


The Regent can be rented out for special events and meetings.  


Hillsborough Community College will also offer a few classes out of the facility.

Ryan Mallett wins Tampa's Premier Player Award

Tampa, FL-- Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett won the inaugural Premier Player of College Football award Saturday night in Tampa. 


Mallett accepted the award during the charitable awards dinner at the USF Marshall Center.


Mallett drew the most votes in online voting. The other four finalists were Michigan QB Denard Robinson, Washington QB Jake Locker, Oregon RB LaMichael James and Iowa QB Ricky Stanzi.

Tampa, Florida -- The Dorothy Thomas School in Tampa is a school for students who have not been successful in traditional institutions for various reasons. The school has individualized programs targeted at these special students.

"Every morning when students show up, you welcome them to school, tell them to have a great day, do your best... that's my motto, make good decisions and do the right thing," said John Rose, a paraprofessional at the school.

Rose has been doing the right thing at Dorothy Thomas for the past 20 years, helping students who have special challenges.

"We've had students who are practically homeless sometimes, and they go without," Rose said.

Temple Terrace Fire Department names its Firefighter of the Year

Temple Terrrace, FL -- Firefighter/Paramedic Joseph Cable has been named the Temple Terrace Fire Department’s 2010 Firefighter of the Year.

The award recognizes Cable’s high level of performance as a firefighter and paramedic, along with his commitment to the community and his achievements in several department operations.

Since 2008, Cable has been the lead instructor for the fire department’s Risk Watch safety program, which teaches third-graders how to identify safety risks and protect themselves from serious injury.

Tampa, Florida -- A 24-year veteran of the Tampa Police Department has resigned after being relieved from duty. He allegedly had sex in his unmarked cruiser while working.

A TPD spokesperson said 46-year-old Corporal Scott Guffey was confronted with the evidence and decided to resign.
