Tampa, FL -- The University of South Florida Graduate School is about to conclude its year-long celebration of its 30th Anniversary.


The school is going to hold a special ceremony to recognize distinguished alumni, mentors and student scholars.


Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio will be honored as the USF Graduate School Outstanding Alumni Recipient.

An Evening with Charles Dickens comes to Ybor

Tampa, FL -- An Evening with Charles Dickens staring actor Giles Davies will open Thursday at the Mainstage Theatre on the Hillsborough Community College Ybor City campus.


Shows are scheduled for March 3 - 5.


An Evening with Charles Dickens is a light-hearted and varied look at the life and character of Dickens with half of the performance dedicated to his impressions of America from his 1842 visit.

Plant City -- One of the best kept secrets is out.  Marsha Passmore is the 2011 Outstanding Citizen of Plant City.

She was introduced at Wednesday's award luncheon to the surprise of almost everyone there.  About 160 people attended the luncheon.

A former city commissioner, Passmore is director of marketing for Hopewell Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens. She is also very involved in charities and organizations. She is a lifelong resident of Plant City.

Tampa Trib scammers sentenced to state prison

Tampa, Florida - The former credit manager of the Tampa Tribune and his wife have been sentenced for embezzling more than $1 million from the newspaper.

Charles T. Wilson received three years in federal prison on his guilty plea to mail fraud over a 10 year period. His wife, Lynda, got nearly 2 -1/2 years for making a false statement.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said they used a fake collections agency to embezzle more than $1 million from the Tribune between 1998 and 2008, and made false statements about their income on an application for a mortgage loan, by hiding the fact that part of their income was stolen.

Plant City, Florida -- Plant City resident Wendy Brown is leading the charge to create an American Cancer Society Plant City Cancer Resource Center.

Brown lost her father and husband to cancer.  Her mother is a cancer survivor.

She recognized the need for an American Cancer Society in Plant City immediately.  The nearest ones are located in Tampa and Lakeland.  She says that's a long distance to travel when people are sick.

Westchase, Florida -- Westchase attorney Martin Schwartz lost his mother to Lymphoma in 1998.  He has been working with The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) in her honor to help raise money for the research and cure.  Nearly a million Americans are living with one of these diseases.  The LLS is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research. 

Schwartz has set a goal of raising $50,000 over the next few months to support the cause and is a candidate for the prestigious LLS Man and Woman of the Year Award for 2011.  Multiple fundraising functions have been organized by Schwartz to help reach this goal, including two upcoming events:

Tampa, Florida --  Brett Steinfeld isn't quite old enough to drive a car, but the young Westchaser has become the driving force of a unique fundraiser that's collected thousands of dollars for cancer research.

He's putting together the annual "Amazing Race for Life" as part of his Bar Mitzvah project.

Steinfeld says he was inspired last year by his grandfather for was dying of pancreatic cancer. 

Since he knew his grandfather would likely not survive to make it to his Bar Mitzvah, he decided to host the event last year so his grandfather could see his project.
