Plant City soldier killed in Afghanistan

Plant City, Florida - Lance Cpl. Ronald D. Freeman, 25, of Plant City, died April 28, 2011 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.

Freeman who survived by his wife and child was a combat engineer assigned to 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Freeman deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in March 2011.

Community businesses unite to pull off Mother's Day makeover

Direct Effect Fitness recently announced its Makeover a Mom contest. Just in time for mother’s day, this contest aims to reward one local mom with a total body makeover.

“My mom means a great deal to me and she’s the kind of mom that will spend all day every day taking care of others. It can be a challenge to get her to spend time on herself” says Allan Keller, owner of Direct Effect Fitness and creator of the Makeover a Mom contest.

Keller continues, “I know there are a lot of moms out there like mine, so I wanted to try to do something to say thank you and give a little back.”

Keller sought out other business owners in the Westchase area to help put together an incredible makeover package which includes fitness, beauty and spa services as well as a night out in Westchase. The winning mom’s total makeover will include:

Mayor Buckhorn names new chief of staff, chief financial officer

Tampa, FL -- Mayor Bob Buckhorn has appointed Santiago Corrada as the city's new chief of staff. Corrada has been with the City of Tampa for seven years and has served as the Neighborhood Services Administrator and the Convention Center, Tourism, Recreation and Cultural Arts Administrator. 

In this role, Corrada has the overall management responsibility for the Convention Center, continued oversight of the Parks and Recreation Department, arts programs, coordination of major events and is the mayor's representative on non-profit boards.

Sonya Little, a new addition to the leadership team, has been appointed as the City of Tampa's chief financial officer.  Little will bring over 19 years of municipal finance experience to the City as an analyst, financial advisor, and investment banker.

Tampa, FL -- Tampa native and Hillsborough High School graduate class of 1997, David Ponder IV was promoted to the rank of Marine Corps gunnery sergeant during a ceremony with fellow Marines aboard Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Virginia, Tuesday, April 26.

Gunnery Sergeant Ponder, who entered active military service in August 1997 is currently serving as the intelligence chief if the Coordination, Liaison and Assessment Team, Marine Corps Forces, North located within Marine Corps Training and Advisory Group (MCTAG) in Virginia Beach, Va.

USF's Terrell McClain to sign autographs today

Tampa, FL -- University of South Florida (USF) First team Big East Defensive Tackle Terrell McClain, expected to be drafted in the early rounds of the NFL Draft this Thursday, will sign autographs and visit fans at Bucs and Bulls Heaven today, April 23, 1 - 3 p.m.

The cost per autograph is $10, with all proceeds benefiting Shriner's Hospital for Children in Tampa. Minimum $10 store purchase.

Bucs and Bulls Heaven offers many autograph-friendly items including footballs, mini helmets and photographs.
