Hillsborough County homeless numbers released

Hillsborough County homeless numbers released

Hillsborough County, FL -- Having just 24 hours to count every homeless person in Hillsborough County, 300 volunteers canvassed Hillsborough County’s 1,000 square miles and answered more than 1,100 phone calls on January 27, 2011.

They counted 17,755 homeless men, women and children living in Hillsborough County.

Some were living on the street, in shelters, behind buildings and in wooded areas; others were living doubled up with family and friends and in motel rooms.  All lacked a fixed regular nighttime residence.

“This year’s count gives us the best pictures of the homeless situation in our community,” Rayme L. Nuckles, CEO of the Homeless Coalition of Hillsborough County said in a statement.  “This is the first time we’ve been able to count people living doubled up.  Lacking a fixed regular nighttime residence is really what makes a person homeless.”

Tampa, FL -- You can find Walter Kerbis in the same spot along Bayshore Boulevard just about every time a fallen military member returns to Tampa Bay.

"I'm here to tell them thanks," Kerbis said.

He describes seeing the body escorted from MacDill Air Force as always an emotional experience.

But on Wednesday, as the body Plant City Marine Lance Corporal Ronald Freeman was led toward downtown Tampa, Kerbis says it was even more moving than normal.

Lance McCullers voted "Mr. Baseball"

Lance McCullers voted "Mr. Baseball"

Tampa, FL -- Lance McCullers is as good a high school baseball player, as anyone in the Bay area... and maybe in the state.

Last year, Lance was Jesuit High's closer.  This year, he's a starter, with a 90-plus fastball.  But mainly, he's on the field all the time.

"I've always been an infielder growing up," Lance told 10 News.  "I pitched a little bit for my AAU team, growing up, but I've mostly been an infielder."

He's only a junior, but scouts have still had plenty of opportunities to look at Lance.  He projects to be a first round draft choice in the summer of 2012.  But in case something happens with professional baseball, he's still ready for the future.
