Wade Boggs presents Athletic Achievement Award to King High student

Tampa, FL -- Brandon Sinjin Sato is one of Hillsborough County’s top high school baseball players, and now he can add another distinction to his long list of accomplishments — winner of Hillsborough County’s 6th Annual Wade Boggs Athletic Achievement Award.

Sato was recognized by Wade Boggs and the County Commission during their regular Board meeting this morning, June 15 at County Center in downtown Tampa.

Tanner Anderson from Plant High School and Emilio Ogando of Durant High School were also recognized with Honorable Mention awards.

The award, named in honor of 12-time baseball All Star and former Tampa Bay Devil Rays Wade Boggs, was established by the Hillsborough County Commission in 2005 to recognize the outstanding athletic and scholastic achievements of a high school baseball player or team.

Riverview, FL -- On June 14, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Internet Predator Unit concluded a two-month online child exploitation investigation with the arrest of a 40-year-old Riverview man.

Peter Barnhill was arrested on 20 counts of possessing child pornography and as a result of a search of his home on Beechberry Drive, enhanced each count to a 2nd degree felony.

After his arrest, Barnhill admitted to police to downloading files depicting child pornography and saving them in a folder titled "Hold".

Cpl. John Spala named Temple Terrace Officer of the Year

Temple Terrace, FL -- Cpl. John Spala has been honored as the Temple Terrace Police Department's 2010 Officer of the Year, Police Chief Kenneth Albano announced this week.

Spala, 40, is a veteran of the Temple Terrace Police Department with 20 years of service.

During the past year, Cpl. Spala's performance has eclipsed that of his peers, officials said in presenting the award.

He is an integral member of the police force and devotes much of his time to the success and improvement of the department.

The event is being held on Friday, June 10 from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. at Salute! Sports Grill located at 11238 Boyette Road in Riverview.

While admission is free you can purchase food and drinks from Salute! Sports Grill.

The restaurant is donating 10% of the evening food and beverage sales to the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce.

Dr. Bernard Weinstein, associate director of Southern Methodist University's Maguire Energy Institute, will discuss oil industry earnings on June 13 at Pebble Creek Golf Club off of Bruce B Downs Blvd.

Weinstein says these profits ultimately benefit the economy. He argues that reducing tax breaks for energy producers would make domestic energy production more expensive and increase consumer prices.

The American Petroleum Institute is sponsoring Weinstein's speaking engagements as well as a recent spate of TV commercials.

Former SNL comedian Rob Schneider in Ybor this weekend

Tampa, FL -- Former Saturday Night Live comedian Rob Schneider will be appearing at the Improv in Ybor City this weekend.

The star movies like "Deuce Bigalow," "Big Daddy" and "Grown Ups" will perform June 10-12.

Tickets start at $27 for his Friday and Sunday evening shows and $30 for his Saturday performances.

The Improv is located at 1600 East 8th Ave.

Hillsborough Law Enforcement to host summer blood drives in honor of fallen officers

The Tampa Police Department and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office are dedicating their 2011 Summer Blood Drive Campaign in honor of their fallen officers.  The TPD inaugural blood drive event will be held on Tuesday, June 7, 2011 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. in Gas Light Park at 411 Franklin St., with a cookout beginning at 11 a.m. 

The HCSO will follow with their kick off blood drive and cook out on Friday, June 10, 2011 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at 520 Falkenburg Rd. and a drive at 1201 Orient Rd. in Tampa from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.  Over the course of the summer, their goal is to give over 325 blood donations to help save local patient lives. 

“As first responders, law enforcement personnel see first hand the need for blood from healthy donors to be immediately available when it is needed most,” said JB Gaskins, FBS Vice President. “It is commendable that not only do they understand the need, but they also help to meet it,” said Gaskins.
