Grandmother with grit injured skydiving

Tampa, Florida - Patsy Detamore is working on her arm strength at University Community Hospital because she'll need plenty of it as she learns to walk again. Detamore's left leg is now a mass of metal after it was nearly severed during a skydiving accident.

Detamore had been skydiving before back in 2000 and she enjoyed it. "I like being up high. You can look all around and see everywhere," she said of the experience.

So, naturally, she wanted to skydive again for - get this - her 87th birthday. "It just seemed like the thing to do," she says with a shrug.

But on June 3 something went wrong on her high-flying adventure. During the tandem jump, Detamore's leg hit a ladder on the plane and she could see that the injury was bad. "I saw my foot was dangling off to the side and as I saw blood everywhere."
