New AP STEM courses hitting Hillsborough high schools next Fall

Tampa, Florida--  Hillsborough County students can look forward to a wider selection of Advanced Placement courses at 11 high schools this coming fall.

According to Hillsborough Public Schools reps, the schools were selected to participate in the College Board's new AP STEM Access Porgram, designed to increase the number of female and minority students who enroll in the courses nationwide.

Hillsborough County Commissioner, Kevin Beckner, to hold monthly office

Hillsborough County, Florida-- Commissioner Kevin Beckner, District 6, Countywide, is hosting office hours in the community one Wednesday every month for the rest of the year.

According to the commissioner, the office hours will take place in various spots around the county to give residents a chance to meet with him one-on-one and  share ideas and/or  voice concerns without having to travel to County Center in downtown Tampa.

No appointment is necessary and residents are seen on a first-come, first-served basis.

USF appoints new Chief Diversity Officer

Tampa, Florida -- University of South System Florida President Judy Genshaft announced Monday the appointment of Jose E. Hernandez to the newly created position of Chief Diversity Officer and leader of USF’s expanded Office of Diversity and Inclusion.

Hernandez, a former USF diversity official who has served at the University of North Carolina Wilmington in recent years, will return to USF to lead a proactive and positive strategy to expand USF’s diversity and inclusion efforts in all aspects of system operations, the president announced.

Highlands Sheriff's deputies win shootout benefiting Youth Ranch

Okeechobee, Florida -- Two members of the Highlands County Sheriff's Office walked away with the overall title in the Seacoast National Bank Sheriff's Shootout at Quail Creek Plantation in Okeechobee.

Lt. John Barcinas and Detective Sgt. Brian Kramer went home with a check for $2,000 to be donated to the Florida Sheriff's Youth Ranch in the name of the Highlands County Sheriff's Office.

The shooting competition included teams representing Highlands, DeSoto, Glades, Hendry, Okeechobee, Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie County Sheriff's Offices.
