Card skimmers could be back in Hillsborough County

Hillsborough County, Florida -- It's an ongoing problem at some Bay area gas stations that leaves you footing the bill, sometimes for hundreds of dollars.

Another victim has come forward claiming her debit card information was stolen by a card skimmer at a gas station.

The number one thing you need to look for when you're at a gas station is if there are any doors on the pump ajar. Your credit information may be in danger if the card machine on the pump isn't completely closed.

That's what April Dispenza said happened to her when she got gas at a Radiant Marathon station more than a week ago.

"I saw the door where the gauges are and it looked slightly ajar," Dispenza said. "Didn't think anything about it until I got an e-mail on the 21st telling me that my debit card had been defrauded."

The scam put her out close to $200.

"I feel very violated," she said.

10 News went to the station in question to see if any card machines had been tampered with, and while none were open, we found seven pumps without the proper security tape.

"There should be tape here," said station manager John Khesravi. "What she's telling you, that this was open, that's not true."

He said there's no way Dispenza saw one of the machines open. We asked if proper security measures weren't taken, how could customers be sure about the safety of the pumps at the station? Khesravi said it's a legitimate concern.

The lack of security tape is his fault, he said.

"In this case, I've been lazy, to be honest. I should have done it," he said.

We watched as Khesravi replaced security tape on the pumps, but not before customers like Wanda Fuentes heard about the possible scam.

"Now you made me worried, and I see that that one don't have no tape, and that's like a seal of approval, you know what I mean?" she said.

Keeping track of your credit card and bank statements is also a big part of staying secure, because your card companies may not catch all fraudulent transactions.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said they will launch an immediate investigation as soon as Dispenza files an official report.
