Mom accused of killing kids will not face death penalty

New Tampa, Florida -- There's new information in the case of a woman accused of murdering her two teenage children.

Prosecutors have told the defense that they will not seek a death sentence if Julie Schenecker is convicted of murder.

Schenecker is accused of shooting her two children, 16-year-old Calyx and 13-year-old Beau back in January of 2011.

A spokesman for the State Attorney's Office said in an email that the overwhelming evidence of mental health issues would make a death sentence unlikely to withstand the scrutiny of the Florida Supreme Court.

The trial is expected to begin on April 28. Schenecker's lawyers have notified the court they intend to argue she was insane at the time of the killings.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
