Busch Gardens' new 335-foot tall ride is hurricane proof

Tampa, Florida -- There are no screams coming from Falcon's Fury yet, just the sound of construction crews. But the main tower is already complete and it rises 335-feet into the air.

That's more than 130-feet taller than Sheikra, the next tallest ride at the theme park.

But what might be even more impressive than Falcon's Fury's height is the work done underground.

Jeff Hornick, Busch Gardens Director of Design and Engineering says the foundation of Falcon's Fury is 200-feet deep.

He also says the steel at the base of the ride is 3-and-a-half inches thick, tapering towards the top.

Construction continues on Falcon's Fury at Busch Gardens

In addition Hornick says the steel bends helping make the ride hurricane proof.

"So anytime the sun is hitting it, the steel is going to expand and it will constantly be bending away from the sun and in any windy condition, the ride can actually bend up at the very top up to 3 feet," Hornick said on Wednesday.

Falcon's Fury will carry 32-passengers with the ride lasting just over 2-minutes. But the highlight will be the 5-to-6 second drop which riders will experience face first. Hornick explains the chairs passengers will be strapped into are designed to tilt forward 90-degree before the big drop.

The area around Falcon's Fury, once called Timbuktu, is also getting a make-over and will now be called Pantopia. Busch Gardens VP of Design and Engineering Mark Rose says vibrant colors will be the hallmark of the area.

Rose revealed on Wednesday that Pantopia will also feature a new live animal show in the former Timbuktu Theater called Late Night Critters.

Both Pantopia and Falcon's Fury are scheduled to open this spring.
