Deputies search for man who tried abduct police officer's wife

Tampa, Florida-- New surveillance video released Thursday shows a suspect pacing for about 25 minutes outside a busy Bealls Department Store, before allegedly attacking the wife of a Tampa police officer in the parking lot.

Major John Newman's wife says around 6:30 Wednesday night, the man snuck up behind her, put something to her back, grabbed her, and warned her not to say anything.

"She said she's never seen him.  He was a total stranger," Maj. Newman explained.

His wife said in the attack, at the store near the intersection of Dale Mabry and Mapledale, the suspect was only after her, not her purse.

"Now I know how the victim feels.  I didn't like it at all," Newman said.

His wife screamed "fire!" several times, which she learned in safety classes, and was able to get away unharmed.

Hillsborough deputies say extra patrols are out near shopping centers and malls over the holidays, but they warn shoppers to be extra vigilant, looking for anything suspicious or anyone watching them.

The suspect is described as in his 50's, about 5'8" or 5'9", between 160 and 180 lbs.

He has sandy blonde hair with a shaggy beard.

If you recognize him, contact Crimestoppers at 1-800-873-8477 or the Hillsborough Sheriff's Office at 813-247-8200.
