Westshore: transit hub of the future?

Tampa, Florida -- Wouldn't it be interesting to see a monorail zipping through Westshore? Or maybe a high-speed train down the center of I-275? All of these ideas could become a reality if city and state leaders look to a big-city future.

The Westshore Business District could become a hub for the region's public transit system. This could include light rail, bus or rapid transit.

Identified in a Florida Department of Transportation feasibility study, the project called the Westshore Multimodal Center would include a platform between the interstate from N. Trask Street to N. Manhattan Avenue and serve as a waiting area for travelers to get on and off the system.

It also includes a light rail/bus station/parking garage. This would be built along the interstate with a walkway over the lanes and allow people to park and ride to work or to other locations.

The I-275 widening project between State Road 60 and downtown Tampa is set for completion in 2016. The project designers left a 44-foot space between the north and south lanes, for a mass transit system.
