2013 Strawberry Festival preparations underway

Plant City, Florida - The 2013 Strawberry Festival starts this week, and preparations are still underway.

"We're pretty much done. We've got everything in; it's just organizing and a lot of last minute stuff," said Jana Granum, a vendor at the festival.

And festival vendor Ed Reeder told us it's a lot of work.

"It takes quite a bit to put this together, and we come from another show to get here, so we keep moving."

Although weather conditions are not so great, wet or dry, doors will open early Thursday.

"The shows are rain or shine because the stage is covered, but the audience isn't covered, so many times they sit there with their umbrellas and enjoy the show anyway," Festival Board Member Sandee Sytsma told us Tuesday.

There will still be the traditional food stands selling your favorite treats and, of course, the making of the strawberry shortcake- but event organizers say there's also something new to look forward to this year.

"We have a dog show!" said Sandee of the new event. "One of the dogs is a three legged dog. His name is Nubs, but he's a rescue dog and it's really great. We saw him in Vegas and just had to have him!"

If that doesn't excite you enough, you'll want to check out the midway to see what organizers are calling the tallest traveling ride in the world. They say it swings passengers around 250 feet above the ground!

And if that doesn't float your boat, there are plenty of other rides and events to do and see!

From the art show to the Queen Hall of Fame, Sandee said, "We've got it!"

The first day of the Florida Strawberry Festival is Thursday, February 28, and it will remain open through March 10.

There's still time to buy regular admission tickets in advance for a discounted rate- $8 for adults, and just $4 for children ages 6-12. Kids under five are free!

You can also purchase tickets online for any of the scheduled performances. Headlining acts include Blake Shelton, Martina McBride and Scotty McCreery- just to name a few.
