Overturned Tanker closes SR 64 East in Hardee County

Hardee County, Florida – A tanker overturned just before 3 p.m. today off SR 64 East in Hardee County, and the road is closed between Kelly Roberts Road and Parnell Road. 

According to Polk County Fire Rescue, the following agencies have responded to the scene:

  • Hardee County Fire Rescue
  • Hardee County Emergency Management
  • Polk County Fire Rescue Hazardous Materials Team
  • Highlands County Fire Department 

The semi-tanker was traveling eastbound carrying 8,000 gallons of diesel and gasoline when it lost control and overturned. The accident, according to Polk County Fire Rescue, caused the tanker to spill approximately 4,500 gallons onto the shoulder.

They say the road will be completely shut down into the evening as wreckers upright and remove the semi and a third party clean up crew excavates the contaminated soil.

The driver, they sat, was airlifted to a local hospital, and his condition is unknown.
