Political battle heats up after resignation at County Center

Tampa, Florida -- A political battle is escalating after Hillsborough County Commission Candidate Sharon Calvert abruptly resigned from the Citizen's Advisory Committee.

According to a news release issued by Calvert Wednesday, she resigned because "it appears (Victor) Crist has used his politics and position to direct and appropriate tens of millions of tax dollars to his own nonprofit organization. Taxpayers paid to build his community center, taxpayers continue to subsidize it and the nonprofit has a "sweetheart" lease agreement worth hundreds of thousands of dollars a year with the County."

Calvert, who is running against Commissioner Victor Crist, sites 1999 St. Pete Times article. When confronted about the spending, Crist's response was "So what!"

Calvert says in her news release, "Crist is out of touch with the pulse of taxpayers who are tired of career politicians using their influence for the benefit of themselves, or their own organizations or associations."

Crist, however, says this is a last ditch effort of mudslinging by a losing candidate. Crist points out the organization is set up to benefit the public, he is no longer chairman and has never benefited from the nonprofit.
