Sebring, Florida-- Sheriff Susan Benton says now is the time to register for the improved Florida Do Not Call List!

Administered by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, this program bans unsolicited telemarketing calls to residential, mobile and paging telephone numbers.

The most recent improvement in the program is the elimination of the annual fee. Your residential and/or cell phone number will be listed for five years at no charge.

"This only takes a few minutes on the internet and is sure worth a peaceful family dinner without a telemarketer calling. I did it myself and it is easy", says Sheriff Benton. "If you do not have access at home to a computer, check with a neighbor, go to the library, or come by the Sheriff's Office and we will help you out."

Phone numbers are added to the registry quarterly. For example, persons who signed up for this program prior to May 25 will be added to the list on July 1.

The next batch of numbers will be added on Oct. 1 and must be submitted by Aug. 25. According to the Department of Agriculture's website (www.freshfromflorida.com) consumers can sign up at www.800helpfla.com or by calling 1-800-HELP-FLA (1-800-435-7352) or 1-800-FL-AYUDA (1-800-352-9832) for Spanish speaking callers.

Unfortunately, Florida law does not prohibit charities or political groups from making telephone solicitations. Sales calls from companies that you have done business with in the past are also exempt from the law.

Despite these limitations, the Department of Agriculture reports that almost 100,000 Floridians registered over 220,000 phone numbers by the end of May. With these additions almost 300,000 phone numbers will be on Florida's Do Not Call list as of July 1.
