Jefferson holds off Newsome rally, 39-37

Lithia, FL-- Jefferson held off a furious rally by Newsome in the 4th quarter, to win, 39-37.

Jefferson QB Deiondre Porter was 17-27 passing, for 285 yards, and 4 touchdowns.

Newsome RB Clint Carnell rushed for a 20 yard touchdown, to bring the Wolves within 2 points in the 4th quarter.  But their 2-point conversion attempt failed.

Seven high school football games relocated Friday

Tampa, Florida-- 10 News continues to update you with Tropical Storm Isaac information, and though the storm may not hit the Bay area until Sunday, Hillsborough County Schools will relocate their Friday night varsity football games.

The following game locations have changed due to "unplayable field conditions":

Vernon Hargreaves III goes with Gators

Tampa, FL-- 5-star cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III of Wharton HS, gave a verbal committment to the University of Florida Thursday.

After spending the day on the Gainesville campus, Hargreaves posted on his Twitter account:

"I can officially say I have committed to the University of Florida."

Hargreaves is the #9 rated overall prospect, according the Rivals100, and the #2 rated cornerback in the nation.


King's Barnum ready for bigs

Tampa, Fla. -- Keon Barnum is ready for Monday's baseball draft, regardless of when he gets a phone call from a Major League team.

"It don't really matter what team," Barnum said. "Whatever spot I get picked in, just go out and play."

Barnum is a likely first-day draft pick, with the potential to go in the first round.  With comparisons to Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard, Barnum is big (6'4", 225 pounds) with a smooth left-handed swing.

"When we got him he was a great hitter," King head coach Jim Macaluso said. "We left him alone."

Hargreaves recruited by everyone and dad

Tampa, Fla. -- Vernon Hargreaves III has heard all the recruiting pitches from college football coaches.  He hears them in bulk these days, since he is considered the nation's top defensive back in the class of 2013.

The Wharton cornerback/safety listens closely to his dad's guidance.

"He says as fast as they come," the younger Hargreaves said. "they can leave."

Lance McCullers named Florida Gatorade Player of the Year

Tampa, FL-- Jesuit HS senior pitcher Lance McCullers has been named the Florida Gatorade Player of the Year.

McCullers helped lead the Jesuit Tigers to a 28-2 record this season, and a national number-1 ranking most of the year.  The Tigers advanced to the state semifinals the past 3 seasons.

McCullers had a 13-0 record with a 0.18 ERA this season.  He struck out 140 hitters, and consistently hit the high 90's on the radar gun.

Tampa Prep wins 3A State Championship

Lakeland, FL-- Tampa Prep won its first boys state basketball championship, with a 58-50 win over Sagemont HS in the 3A final.

In head coach Joe Fenlon's 29-year career at Tampa Prep, he led the Terrapins to 7 state tournaments... but with no championships.  That all changed today, in his 8th try at state.

Marshall Holmes led Tampa Prep with 17 points.  Josh Heath, the son of USF head coach Stan Heath, chipped in with 15.
