Tampa, Fla. -- Jawuan Coffee can't explain why he decided to tell his story on the biggest day of football life.

Very few people at Jefferson High School knew what pushed Jawuan on the football field.  All they have to know is that the wide reciever loves life, regardless of where it's taken him.

"I don't want to be one of those people that starts at the bottom and stays at the bottom," Jawuan said the day after signing to play football at Becker College in Massachusetts.

Jawuan has seen the bottom.  When he was 5 or 6 years old, Jawuan slept under a bridge with his mom and three siblings.

"That was one of the worst things ever," Jawuan said. "Some days you wake up and not know where you're gonna stay at."

The state took Jawuan, his sister and two brothers away from their mom.  Ella Coffee intervened for Jawuan.

"It wasn't a question of ever doing it," Ella said. "It was tell me when."

"She means the world to me," Jawuan said. "My aunt's pretty much all I've got."

Since 2004, Jawuan has lost his mom, dad, sister, and grandmother.  They all inspire him in football.

"I'm very passionate about the game, Juwuan said. "I know they're looking down on me and protecting me and they're watching me every game, so I play through them."

Jawuan says that after his football career, he would like to pursue a career in politics.  He aspires to be a senator or representative.

He has quite a story to share with his constituents.  Jawuan's aunt is a huge part of that story.

"My life would have been, I really think, empty without Jawuan," Ella said. "He has filled a void in my life and I filled a void and a need in his life."

"I want to be successful for her," Jawuan said. "because all the things she had to sacrifice for me to be where I am today."
