USF searching for Parkinson's patients for study

Tampa, Florida (AP) -- The University of South Florida is looking to recruit people with Parkinson's disease for a study being sponsored by the Michael J. Fox Foundation.

USF is one of 16 centers participating. The study aims to find the elusive biomarkers for Parkinson's -- signs in the blood or urine, for example, that could help doctors diagnose and track the disease.

Patients in the study need to be newly diagnosed and not on any medications yet. Participants will not receive any medication for this study.

They will instead undergo brain scans and tests of their blood, urine and spinal fluid -- all areas where researchers are looking for biomarkers. Finding biomarkers is the first step to developing more effective treatments, experts say.
