TGH named 10th busiest transplant center in nation

Tampa, FL -- Tampa General Hospital ranks as the 10th busiest transplant center out of 251 programs in the nation for 2010, according to the most recent data compiled by the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN).

The OPTN ensures the success and efficiency of the U.S. organ transplant system.

It is administered by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), the agency that manages the country’s organ transplant system for the federal government.

Each year the OPTN releases patient volume statistics for the nation’s transplant centers on its website.

Last year, Tampa General and its organ procurement partner, Lifelink performed 421 organ transplants. In 2009, the hospital performed 399, making it the 12th busiest transplant center in the country according to the OPTN report.

Tampa General’s transplant program, which is one of five major transplant programs in Florida, performs heart, lung, kidney, pancreas, liver transplants and pediatric kidney transplant surgeries.

“Everyone should be proud of the fact that Tampa General is one of the busiest transplant programs in the country,” Angie Korsun, administrator of Transplant Services said in a statement. "The hundreds of medical and hospital staff who comprise the hospital’s multi-disciplinary transplant team have played a major role in contributing to the program’s progress and success," she said.

TGH’s lung transplant program, established in 2002, is now the 5th busiest in the nation according to the OPTN data, up from the 12th busiest in 2009.

During 2010, the hospital performed 58 lung transplant surgeries, an increase of 20 from the previous year.

Fifty-three heart transplants were also performed at TGH in 2010, making it the fifth busiest program in the country.

According to the OPTN’s statistics, TGH also is the 13th busiest kidney transplant program in the nation, performing 201 kidney transplants last year.  The hospital also performed 17 kidney-pancreas transplants and 91 liver transplants in 2010.
