Mosi's 'Mission Moonbase' opened December 15

TAMPA, Fla., – MOSI’s newest permanent exhibition, Mission: Moonbase, funded in part by a grant from NASA, provides guests the opportunity to experience NASA’s vision for living on worlds beyond Earth.  Mission: Moonbase is included with MOSI admission and free for MOSI members.

Mission: Moonbase, which opened to the public on Dec. 15, will be located inside Kids In Charge!, MOSI’s children’s science center, and will include exhibits that transport visitors to a lunar outpost located on the south pole of the moon. Visitors will travel to the moon to help operate this lunar colony. They will become part of a team, living and working on the moon in the year 2070, achieving what once seemed impossible – a home away from Earth. Through an interactive immersive experience, enhanced with various augmented reality (AR) simulations and virtual views to the vast lunarscape, participants in Mission: Moonbase will discover what is needed to thrive and maintain human habitation in a harsh environment.

Within the Mission: Moonbase center will be various zones or pods that help the guest to organize the information in the primary topics of off-world habitation. In each zone, guests will help make the colony sustainable by carrying out certain activities and then getting feedback on their success.  Other operations within Mission: Moonbase include manipulating a robot to repair the colony, practicing the manipulation of objects while wearing a spacesuit, monitoring resource production and activating the magnetic field to protect the colony from solar radiation.

“We are so grateful to NASA for helping to fund such an immersive and fun exhibition like Mission: Moonbase,” said Wit Ostrenko, MOSI president. “It’s an honor to support NASA’s education mission, while incorporating MOSI’s educational initiatives to develop STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics fields) skills in students of all levels.”
