USF celebrates Fall graduation ceremony

Tampa, Fla. -- The University of South Florida System will confer degrees for approximately 2,900 students in a series of ceremonies Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 15 and 16. USF President Judy Genshaft will preside over the ceremonies.

Commencement exercises for the University of South Florida Tampa campus will be held in the USF Sun
Dome on Saturday at 9 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.

The 9 a.m. ceremony will recognize undergraduates from the College of Arts & Sciences. More than 800 graduates are anticipated.

Judge John Germany will receive the President's Fellow Medallion in the ceremony. Judge Germany made his mark in USF history by helping to secure the legislation which established USF in 1956 and the early state financial support to enroll students and begin classes.

The 1:30 p.m. ceremony will recognize undergraduates from Colleges of Behavioral and Community Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering, Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, The Arts and Undergraduate Studies. More than 900 graduates are anticipated.

David Touchton will receive the Distinguished Citizen Award in the ceremony. A longtime civic leader in the region, Touchton served as the Interim Regional Chancellor of USF Polytechnic.

The 6 p.m. ceremony will recognize graduate students from all colleges. More than 600 graduates are anticipated.

Professor Joseph Francisco of Purdue University will receive an Honorary Doctor of Science degree in the 6 p.m. ceremony. Francisco is the William E. Moore Distinguished Professor of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and Chemistry at Purdue University and has supported the education of chemists at USF by serving as the Martin Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry.

USF Sarasota-Manatee will hold its ceremonies on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. USF St. Petersburg will hold it commencement exercises on Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Mahaffey Theatre.

Nine students in the USF System have been identified as King O' Neal Scholar candidates, earning a cumulative grade point average of 4.0.

USF's oldest graduate is 67 and is receiving a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from USF Sarasota-Manatee.

The youngest graduate is 19-year-old Britain Taulbee, who is receiving a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from USF Tampa.

USF graduates come from 44 states and 83 nations.

USF students will earn a total of 4,295 degrees with many students double majoring
