Volunteers to help Tampa Bay Watch build oyster shell bar

Riverview, FL-- Tampa Bay Watch has announced their plan to install an oyster shell bar on the shoreline of Schultz Nature Preserve on the mornings of November 15, 16 and 17.

"Building an oyster reef isn’t easy," Tampa Bay Watch representatives said in a release. "After a six to eight month permit process, Tampa Bay Watch and an anticipated 40 volunteers per day will shovel a total of approximately 20 tons of fossilized oyster shells into mesh bags and then transport each bag by outboard motorboat and place it on the shoreline of the island."

Health advisory issued for 2 Tampa beaches

Hillsborough County, FL--  A Health Advisory has been issued for the following beaches based on the criteria for enterococci bacteria recommended by the EPA:

  • Ben T. Davis Beach
  • Cypress Point Beach

This should be considered a potential risk to the bathing public.

Samples taken Monday were above threshold for enterococci bacteria. 

The beach will be re-sampled, October 8, and if re-sampling indicates that the water is within the satisfactory range, the advisory will be lifted

No tax increase for SWFWMD

Tampa Bay, Florida -- Although the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) increased its operating budget by $4.5 million for the coming fiscal year, property owners will not pay a higher tax to the state agency responsible for flood control and surface and groundwater quality in the Tampa Bay area.

Tuesday night the Southwest Florida Water Management District Governing Board approved the 2012-13 fiscal year budget and millage (or tax) rate. The fiscal year starts Monday, Oct. 1.

Health Advisory lifted for 2 Tampa beaches

Health Advisory lifted for 2 Tampa beaches

Tampa, Florida-- The Hillsborough County Health Department issued an advisory on August 29 for Davis Island Beach, and Bahia Beach.

The department announced today that follow-up testing produced satisfactory results based on the marine water bacterial indicator results as recommended by the EPA.

Prescribed burn in Lithia

Prescribed burn in Lithia

Lithia, Florida-- If you happen to see smoke in the sky and wonder what it's from, there is no need to worry. Hillsborough County has announced a prescribed burn scheduled for today in the Balm-Boyette Scrub Preserve.

The Florida Forest Service and the Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department are conducting the burn because of Palmetto-pine flatwoods and sandhill restoration.

17 Pasco teams take part in 27th annual International Coast Cleanup

Pasco County, Florida-- Pasco County teams will join hundreds of thousands of people around the world as they work towards "Trash free Seas" during the 27th annual International Coast Cleanup. 

On September 15 from 8 a.m. - noon, 17 teams total within Pasco will take part in the cleanup efforts, which involves removing trash and debris from beaches, lakes, rivers and inland areas while keeping track of every piece found.
