Gibsonton, FL -- The Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department is conducting a prescribed burn today, Aug. 23 at Golden Aster Scrub Nature Preserve, 12181 East Bay Road in Gibsonton.

The burn will last one day. The purpose of the burn is Pine Flatwoods maintenance and public safety.

Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful receives national grant for project proposal

Hillsborough County, FL -- Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful was awarded a $10,000 Think Green Grant from national nonprofit Keep America Beautiful, Inc. as part of a nationwide effort that encourages local solutions that improve community environments.

Chosen from a field of 60 excellent applications, Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful's Reuse-A-Palooza project was named one of 14 winning proposals.  Each proposal featured innovative projects designed to increase individual awareness about the local environment through hands-on participation and engagement opportunities.

Reuse-A-Palooza will be held on Nov. 19, as a celebration of recycling and waste reduction to wrap up the America Recycles Day message.

Tampa, FL -- The Florida Forest Service, formerly known as the Florida Division of Forestry, is conducting a prescribed burn today, Aug. 19 at Cypress Creek Nature Preserve, 18998 Lizard Tail Lane in Tampa.

The burn will last one day. The purpose of the burn is for ecological site management.

Public meeting on new water rules

Plant City -- The Southwest Florida Water Management District will answer questions about new water use permitting rules for the Dover/Plant City area.

The public is invited to attend and ask questions.

It will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 23 at the Hillsborough Community College Trinkle Center at 1206 N. Park Road.

Gas leak closes road near VA Hospital

Tampa, FL -- Hillsborough County Fire Rescue has closed down 131st Ave. between Livingston and 23rd Street due to a gas leak at the VA Hospital.

All but 1,200 - 1,800 gallons of a truck's 18,000 gallon load were taken off, and crews are burning off the rest.

At the rate of burning, 131st Ave. between the two streets will be closed until late afternoon or early evening.

According to Fire Rescue, the leak came from a vent on top of the tank that appears to have been rusted from normal exposure to environmental elements.

The event takes place on Saturday, Aug. 13 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at 12210 USF Pine Drive in Tampa.
