Tampa Bay Watch: Volunteers needed to build oyster shell bar

Tampa, Florida-- Tampa Bay Watch is looking for locals to volunteer their time this Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Reps say they'll be building an oyster shell bar on the shoreline of Schultz Nature Preserve. Volunteers can expect to assist with shoveling fossilized oyster shells into mesh bags, transporting those bags via boat and placing oyster shell bags on the shoreline to create a series of oyster bars.

Highlands County, Florida -- For those who want to learn more about nature, visit the Francis Archbold Huffy Learning Center. 

On Tuesday, April 9, guided tours will gather at the learning center and hike through the scrub landscape on the Discovery Loop, Exlplorer's Loop and Scrub Lookout Loop. 

The tour starts at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 11:00 a.m. 

The Archbold Biological Station is located at 123 Main Drive, Venus, Florida.

Tampa, FL (March 27, 2013)-- If you're in northwest Tampa today  and happen to notice some smoke in the sky, don't panic! The county says they are conducting a prescribed burn at Upper Tampa Bay Park.

They've scheduled the burn for ecological site management, and they say it's only scheduled to last through today.

Florida State Parks announces new, free mobile app

Florida-- Trees, lakes, trails, wildlife- they're all things that come to mind when thinking about Florida's parks. Techonology, smartphones and applications, howeverm are probably the last things to come to mind- until now!

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Park Services department has announced the launch of their new, free mobile application, which will serve as an interactive guide for users on the go at any of Florida's 171 parks, trails and historic sites.

UPDATE: Health advisory issued for Ben T. Davis Beach

Tampa, Florida -- UPDATE: The health advisory issued on Jan. 30 for Ben T. Davis Beach has been lifted after health officials say follow-up testing came back satisfactory results.

The Hillsborough County Health Department issued a health advisory for Ben T. Davis Beach Wednesday after samples taken Monday revealed higher than normal levels of enterococci bacteria.

The beach will be re-sampled on Feb. 4.

"Paint the Town" cleans up University Area Community, open-air market to come

Tampa, FL-- The January "Paint the Town" event for the University Area Community kicked off a year round community transformation where volunteer organizations come together to continue previous projects and start new ones. 

Over 1,000 volunteers took part in the clean up a vacant lot along 22nd Street that was strewn with litter and covered in overgrowth. The clean-up will allow for a new open-air Community Market to take place in the area.
