Longtime Tampa lifeguard slain

TAMPA, Florida (AP) - Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputies found a longtime Tampa lifeguard shot to death inside his home and hours later his 22-year-old son was found hiding in his father's missing pickup truck.

Dametrius Edwards, Jr., remained in the Hillsborough County Jail late Tuesday on outstanding felony warrants for burglary, grand theft and violation of a domestic violence injunction.

Tampa, Florida- Friday March 1, the University of South Florida is having a lecture which focuses on wrongful convictions in the legal system.

Being wrongfully accused of a crime occurs much more frequently than Americans imagine.  Jim Petro learned that first hand as Ohio's Attorney General.  He and his wife Nancy, co-authors of False Justice: Eight Myths that Convict the Innocent, will discuss why our justice system convicts the innocent and how we can reduce tragic conviction errors that put all Americans at risk.

Man arrested on molestation charges

Plant City, Florida -- Around noon Thursday, the Plant City Police Department arrested 82-year-old Efrain Rosa Vargas for various molestation charges.

Vargas is being charged with Lewd and Lascivious Molestation on a victim under 12-years-old, and Showing Obscene Materials to a minor, among other things. 

Vargas' arrest stems from allegations that he engaged in inappropriate behavior with two minor children on February 15.




Police identify suspect in GTE Federal Credit Union robbery

Plant City, Florida -- The Plant City Police Department is asking for the public's help tracking down a man who robbed the James L. Redman Parkway Branch of the GTE Federal Credit Union around 5:25 p.m. Tuesday evening.

Plant City detectives, with the help of the Polk County Sheriff's Office and the Department of Probation and Parole, say they have identified the suspect as 32-year-old William David Mounts.  

Detectives believe Mounts is still in the area. He has a violent criminal history and should be considered armed and dangerous.  

State transportation workers catch hit-and-run suspect

Wimauma, Florida -- Hillsborough County deputies are giving credit to a pair of Florida Department of Transportation workers who helped catch and hold a man who tried to flee and hit-and-run incident with a motorcyclist Thursday morning.

Deputies say around 10 a.m., Obispo Valentin was heading west on CR 672 and, when he tried to turn left onto Balm Wimauma Road, he traveled into the path of Brandon Collett's motorcycle that was heading east on the road.

Pair steals lounge chair from mall concourse

Citrus Park, Florida -- Hillsborough County deputies are searching for a man and woman who were caught on camera stealing a chair from a mall concourse on Jan. 7.

Police say the pair stayed in the Westfield Citrus Park Mall after it closed and removed the $1,800 chair and carried it through the emergency doors.
