Tampa Trib scammers sentenced to state prison

Tampa, Florida - The former credit manager of the Tampa Tribune and his wife have been sentenced for embezzling more than $1 million from the newspaper.

Charles T. Wilson received three years in federal prison on his guilty plea to mail fraud over a 10 year period. His wife, Lynda, got nearly 2 -1/2 years for making a false statement.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said they used a fake collections agency to embezzle more than $1 million from the Tribune between 1998 and 2008, and made false statements about their income on an application for a mortgage loan, by hiding the fact that part of their income was stolen.

In addition to imposing the prison terms, U.S. District Judge Virginia Hernandez-Covington entered monetary judgments against them.

Charles Wilson must pay $1.4 million, and his wife, $417,000.
