Police: Woman says domestic abuse led her to shoot husband | Crime
Wesley Chapel, Florida -- A woman has been charged with attempted murder police say she admitted to shooting her husband multiple times early Sunday morning.
Diana Matthews told detectives she got into a heated argument with her husband, George Reavis, around 2 a.m. that turned physical. At some point during the altercation, Matthews said she ran out of their home in the 33000 block of Arthur Drive and he followed her.
When he did, she grabbed a .380 Colt handgun and load a clip into it. She said she then tried to run back to the home but he grabbed her by the hair.
"That's when I turned around and shot him," she told investigators.
Matthews shot her husband multiple times and ran back into the house. She told detectives that's when she tried to shoot herself with the same gun, but couldn't reload it properly. She then called her ex-husband and told him about the shooting. Detectives say her ex-husband confirmed she called him about the shooting.
Once police arrived, she surrendered and was arrested without incident. The gun was recovered from the bathroom. Matthews told detectives she has suffered years of domestic abuse that caused her to shoot her husband.
Reavis was flown to a nearby trauma center where he underwent emergency surgery. He suffered gunshot wounds to his torso and lower groin region. He is very critical condition.
