Second rape on USF campus in 3 weeks | Crime
Tampa, Florida -- For the second time in three weeks, University of South Florida Police are investigating a rape on campus. Authorities say the latest incident occurred inside the Epsilon Residence Hall early Sunday morning and that the victim knew her attacker.
"All indications from the preliminary investigation indicate that the parties involved were acquainted with each other. This is not a stranger situation," USF Police Lt. Charlotte Domingo said.
This past weekend's incident follows a rape inside another nearby residence hall last month. However Domingo says officials do not believe the cases are connected.
Still, the rapes have some students on edge.
"It gets me nervous just for the fact that I live around here and it could really happen to anybody," said USF freshman Aileen Arauz.
"It's kind of just one of those things like, 'Wow!' I just can't believe people would actually do that," added USF student Logan Fagg.
So far no arrests have been made in either case, but Domingo says they are following up on several leads relating to last month's crime.
Domingo declined to say if authorities have identified or interviewed the victim's suspect from this past weekend's incident.
