Man gets life sentence for setting wife on fire | Crime
APOLLO BEACH, Florida - She is truly a miracle.
The first thing you'll notice about Audrey Mabrey is not her scars, but her spirit.
Simply put, she is remarkable, a woman so strong, she says she is praying for her ex-husband, Christopher Hanney.
He is the same man who hit her in the head with a hammer, lit a match and set her on fire in November 2009.
She was burned on more than 80 precent of her body. She was in such excrutiating pain that she was placed in a medically induced coma.
She woke up a month later and was shocked when she looked in the mirror.
"I am using this as a way to inspire others and look at how I can make myself better," she said.
Audrey was in court on Friday at her ex's sentencing.
"I feel good, I feel like justice came through, and I feel like my prayers were answered," she told the media.
Her passion is palpable. She says God gives her strength and is helping her heart to heal.
Audrey said, "I have forgiven Chris for his monstrous actions and i will continue others to forgive as well, which will include my two beautiful sons."
Ironically Christopher Hanney spent his entire life protecting and serving the public as an NYPD officer, even helping to investigate 9/11.
He will now be on the other side of the law as an inmate, which is the decision Audrey wanted all along.
Hanney got a sentence of life in prison.
"I ask that the court, your honor, not show mercy on his earthly life because he did not show mercy on mine or my children's," said Audrey.
The judge called this crime "barbaric and cruel," and in the end, Hanney himself spoke to his ex-wife.
"You are one of the strongest and most courageous persons that I've ever known. Daily, since that darkened day in November 2009, I've earnestly prayed for your well being and forgiveness."
It is a forgiveness she's given for an action she'll never forget.
