60 service projects get help today through USF's Stampede of Service

Tampa, Florida -- More than 3,000 University of South Florida Bulls will take part in the school's Stampede of Service project today.

At 9 a.m., participating students met at the USF Marcus Grayson soccer stadium to take part in more than 60 service projects throughout Hillsborough County.

The event started in January 2006 as a way to celebrate the MLK holiday through community service.

Ruskin, Florida - Cell Phones for Soldiers has provided more than 90 million minutes of free talk time to our troops but organizers at a Ruskin donation site still need your help to continue helping soldiers who want to phone home and keep in touch with friends and loved ones.

Cell Phones for Soldiers has been around since 2004 and organizers have been able to keep 7.5 million cell phones out of landfills.

You can drop off your old cell phones at  Dove Interiors Carpet One at 2305 E. College Avenue in Ruskin.

Tampa, Florida -- The Dorothy Thomas School in Tampa is a school for students who have not been successful in traditional institutions for various reasons. The school has individualized programs targeted at these special students.

"Every morning when students show up, you welcome them to school, tell them to have a great day, do your best... that's my motto, make good decisions and do the right thing," said John Rose, a paraprofessional at the school.

Rose has been doing the right thing at Dorothy Thomas for the past 20 years, helping students who have special challenges.

"We've had students who are practically homeless sometimes, and they go without," Rose said.

Temple Terrace Fire Department names its Firefighter of the Year

Temple Terrrace, FL -- Firefighter/Paramedic Joseph Cable has been named the Temple Terrace Fire Department’s 2010 Firefighter of the Year.

The award recognizes Cable’s high level of performance as a firefighter and paramedic, along with his commitment to the community and his achievements in several department operations.

Since 2008, Cable has been the lead instructor for the fire department’s Risk Watch safety program, which teaches third-graders how to identify safety risks and protect themselves from serious injury.

Plant City, FL -- It was another successful year with a great turnout for the 2011 Junior Royalty Pageant.

Approximately 120 young girls competed for the titles of Baroness, Duchess, Princess and Queen in the pageant on Saturday.
