Local lawyer on a mission

Westchase, Florida -- Westchase attorney Martin Schwartz lost his mother to Lymphoma in 1998.  He has been working with The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) in her honor to help raise money for the research and cure.  Nearly a million Americans are living with one of these diseases.  The LLS is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research. 

Schwartz has set a goal of raising $50,000 over the next few months to support the cause and is a candidate for the prestigious LLS Man and Woman of the Year Award for 2011.  Multiple fundraising functions have been organized by Schwartz to help reach this goal, including two upcoming events:

Plant City, FL -- Is it you? Is it your neighbor? Is it a co-worker?


All those questions will be answered tomorrow, Feb. 23 as Plant City names its Outstanding Citizen of the Year.


This is the 52nd year for the annual award. 


The luncheon will take place at the Red Rose Inn and Suites on North Wheeler Street.

The Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce will be holding its 17th Annual Golf Tournament on Saturday, March 19 at Summerfield Crossings Golf Club which is located at 13050 Summerfield Blvd. in Riverview.

Registration begins at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m.  Four player teams and individual players are welcome.  Local businesses are invited to showcase their organization and become a hole sponsor for $150.  This is your opportunity to be creative and enjoy the spotlight.  Another option is to display your organization’s name as a Green Sponsor for $75.

This year, there is an inclusive team sponsorship package available, playfully called “The Hole Package” which includes one foursome team, 4 entries in the P.F. Auto Glass Putting Contest, 4 entries in the Superior Residences of Brandon Memory Care Chipping Contest, hole sponsorship, listed as an event sponsor, GRCC newsletter and website acknowledgement, lunch for four sponsored by Chick-fil-A at Lake Brandon Village and 4 dinner tickets; all for $600.

A team foursome is $350 or individual players $90.

The Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce held their Annual Membership and Awards Dinner on January 21, 2011.The special event was held at the Embassy Suites Tampa-Brandon, and was sponsored by Mosaic Fertilizer, LLC, Tampa Electric, Crane Tech, LLC, Brandon Regional Hospital/South Bay Hospital, Embassy Suites Tampa-Brandon, Four Paws Veterinary Hospital, The Tampa Tribune/South Shore News and Tribune, and Superior Residences of Brandon Memory Care.

The theme for this year’s dinner was Rocking Through the Years and it was a kick-off to a yearlong celebration for the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce as it turns 45 years old. Guests were welcomed by incoming President Sherri McLean-Walker, Crane Tech, LLC; Jill Andrew, Superior Residences of Brandon Memory Care, gave her final remarks as past president for 2009 and 2010.

The annual awards were presented to 2010 Ambassador of the Year ,Joe Eletto, Century 21-Beggins & Pure 4U, Inc., 2010 Business of the Year, Superior Residences of Brandon Memory Care, 2010 Business Person of the Year, Stacy Self, Sam Cook’s Home Service Centre & Hand to Hope, Inc.

Ruskin, Florida - There's a special Valentine's Day event for Apollo Beach, Riverview and Ruskin children on Wednesday which is an early release day for students attending Hillsborough County schools.

From 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. tomorrow, children ages 5 - 12 can go to the SouthShore Regional Library at 15816 Beth Shields Way in Ruskin where they will be able to create valentine crafts and gifts to take home with them.

Mayor dedicates playground at local park after former Commissioner

Tampa, FL -- Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio is going to dedicate a playground at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park in downtown Tampa in honor of former County Commissioner Dottie Berger MacKinnon.


The official dedication takes place at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 9 at the park.


The playground is being dedicated in recognition of Dottie Berger MacKinnon's commitment and inspiration to the community. 


Berger MacKinnon is involved in numerous community programs, agencies, and non-profit organizations including the Joshua House and A Kid's Place.

Support Tampa school's cancer walk at local Winter Wonderland Bash

Tampa, FL -- You're welcome to join in on a ribbon cutting ceremony and Winter Wonderland Bash for the Fairfield Inn and Suites at 12260 Morris Bridge Rd. in Temple Terrace.


The newly renovated hotel will be revealed at the event on Thursday, Feb. 10 at 5 p.m., in conjunction with The Hope Lodge. 


Guests entering the hotel will walk through a "live" snowfall then are asked to purchase white ribbons supporting the effort to raise awareness and money for lung cancer patients.
