Highlands Health Department earns national recognition for second time

Sebring, Florida-- For the second time, the Highlands County Health Department has received national recognition from the National Association of County & City Health Officials for preparedness planning, ability to respond to public health emergencies and quality improvements.

Recognition can be applied for every five years after meeting a comprehensive list of national standards.

"I would like to thank our Emergency Management Team for this huge accomplishment. This recognition reflects tremendous effort, dedication and cooperation on the part of our employees and community partners," said Robert Palussek, Administrator for the health department. "This recognition means we can protect our community more effectively and efficiently from public health threats."

According to a press statement issued Thursday, PPHR is a competency-based training and recognition program that assesses preparedness and assists local health departments, or groups of local health departments working collaboratively as a region, to respond to emergencies. It builds preparedness capacity and capability through a continuous quality improvement model.

The PPHR criteria are the only known national standards for local public health preparedness and are updated annually to incorporate the most recent federal initiatives. Each of the three PPHR project goals-all-hazards preparedness planning, workforce capacity development and demonstration of readiness through exercises or real events-has a comprehensive list of standards that must be met in order to achieve PPHR recognition.

"NACCHO commends Highlands County Health Department for being a model of public health emergency preparedness," said Robert M. Pestronk, Executive Director of NACCHO. "The public health system is making great strides thanks to the good work of leaders in local public health preparedness such as Highlands County Health Department."
