Tampa, Florida -- 1,000 people have stepped up to the challenge of climbing 42 flights, 914 steps of the Bank of America Plaza in downtown Tampa in the American Lung Association’s 7th annual Fight for Air Climb Tampa on March 24.

The vertical race is raising awareness and funds for lung disease research, education, and prevention programs.  This is the largest stairclimb in the Southeast and last year it ranked 7th on the top 10 highest fundraising climb list.  Co-workers, families, friends and firefighters have joined together to climb the stairs as teams, with over 115 teams registered.  Fire departments from Tampa to Naples will make their way to the top and climb with an additional 55 pounds of gear. Polk County Fire Rescue is the largest team with 46 members. Many teams and individuals are climbing in memory of or in honor of someone with lung disease.

According to their website, over $185,000 has been raised so far, which is extremely close to the American Lung Association's goal of $200,000 for this unique event.

Tabetha Swartz and her team Dane’s Divas have raised over $14,000 in memory of her brother Dane who passed away from lung cancer.

“Last year each step I took was for hope. This year it is to help save others from going through what my brother and our family had to endure. It is for raising money for awareness and research. Each and every step will be for Dane in his memory,” Tabetha said in a release.

While online registration is now closed, spectators can cheer on the climbers and watch this exciting event for a $10 fee. A pre and post party for the climb will take place in the courtyard with music, food, beverages and massages. You can still donate to the event by clicking on the link above.

Sponsors of this event include Wells Fargo, Clear Channel Radio, Columbia Restaurant, Costco and Tropical Smoothie Café.
