Winners named for 2012 Flan Fest | Community Spirit
Tampa, Fla. -- This year's Top Flan in Tampa Bay award goes to Jenna LoCicero in the traditional category and Miriam Santana in the non-traditional category.
The awards were given out Saturday during the 9th annual Flan Fest held in Ybor City.

The 9th Annual Flan Fest celebrated another year of SWEET SUCCESS! An entire festival dedicated to FLAN, the only one in the world! An event that brought 1000's of flan lovers, young and old, to enjoy the "Flan-Tastic" festivities, amazing weather and to celebrate a long-time family traditional, FLAN!
25 contestants spent days, some weeks practicing to perfect their flan in order to earn the title of "2012 Top Flan in Tampa Bay".
Contestants participated in two categories, traditional and non-traditional as well as a presentation category.
Flans ranged from decadent chocolate, toasted coconut to guava and cheesecake.
Judges spent 45 minutes sampling and scoring the creamy, rich dessert as contestants excitedly presented their creations.
"The time and hard work the participants put into their flans was evident and the flans were phenomenal," Elizabeth Dougherty, talk show host for Food Nation Radio Network.
Winners of the 2012 Flan Fest:
Traditional: 1st Place-Jenna LoCicero (#10), 2nd Place-Julia Demeza (#2)
Non-Traditional: 1st Place-Miriam Santana (#5), 2nd Place-Angelina Noble (#8)
Presentation: Traditional, Kristine Landry (#5), Non-Traditional, Nancy Gutierrez (#6)
The winners received cash prizes, handcrafted plaques by Ybor City Saturday Market Artist, Sarita Paccine and most important to all contestants-bragging rights! 1st Place winners in each category will be judges during the 2013 competition.
Flan eating contests and live entertainment were the highlight of the afternoon. 30 participants, hands behind their back, got sticky in the flan eating competition to find out who the true flan lovers were. Entertainment was provided all day including zumba to start the morning, energize the attendees and burn off some calories before indulging in FLAN! Live performances by Tony G, Orlando Lopez, Loji, Simona B and Fiyah Marshall, all courtesy of Juan El Cubano Promotions kept the crowd dancing.
"The 9th Annual Flan Fest was sweet fun, flan is something shared in all the different cultures; this event would make Vicente Ybor proud, so many flans, all delicious!" Tony Morejon, Hillsborough County Hispanic Affairs and Flan Fest Organizer.
"This was the best year ever, competition was tough and all were amazing, but the best part is that each flan shares one common ingredient, family heritage," Lynn Schultz, Director of the Ybor City Saturday Market and Flan Fest Organizer.
Mark your calendars for the last Saturday in February, 2013 as plans are already in the works for the 10 year anniversary. There is talk there will be a competition that includes the winners over the last 10 years to find the BEST FLAN OF THE DECADE IN TAMPA BAY, imagine that?
