Opening ceremony kicks Cultural Arts Festival off today

Plant City, FL - The Plant City Dr. MLK Cultural Arts Festival, which will run from today until Jan. 17, is known for promoting increased diversity awareness and opportunities for citizens of Plant City to engage in gaining knowledge for the past 26 years. The opening ceremony will take place today at 11:30 a.m. at the Plant City MLK Recreation Center at 1601 East Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

Today's event will feature Pastor Carl McKay, the Lincoln Elementary IB Choir, and Gentlemen's Quest of Marshall Middle School, and is sponsored by Buddy Freddy's and Fred's Market Restaurant.

The history of African culture will be emphasized throughout the festival by participating in various cultural activities in partnership with the Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival, to include a city parade, midway, concerts, forums, leadership breakfast, community service projects and educational information and tours of the Plant City Bing Rooming House, an African American Community Museum.

Tampa, FL -- This week marks 150 years since Florida turned its back on the United States and seceded from the Union. In the Tampa Bay area, several places have names tied to the bitter Civil War that followed.


Why do they call it Jackson Street?

You'd figure that just like a $20 bill, Downtown Tampa's Jackson Street would honor General, President, and Florida Governor Andrew Jackson.

Janet Dacal to sing Nat'l Anthem at Outback Bowl

Tampa, Florida - Broadway singer-actress Janel Dacal will sing the National Anthem at the Outback Bowl here on New year's Day, event organizers announced today.

Dacal is currently playing Alice in Frank Wildhorn's Wonderland which holds its pre-Broadway engagement at theStraz Center Jan. 4-6. It opens on Broadway in the spring.

The Outback Bowl will be played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa at 1 p.m. January 1st.

Tampa Bay Children's Chorus to perform at inauguration

TALLAHASSEE, Florida -- A little girl who uses her vocal talents to tell people about autism, a Naval Academy midshipman from Florida who sings with the Navy Glee Club and a children's chorus from Temple Terrace will perform the National Anthem at three events celebrating Gov.-elect Rick Scott's inauguration.

The Scott inaugural committee today announced plans for musical events at the traditional prayer breakfast on inauguration day, Jan. 4, the swearing-in ceremony at the state Capitol and a salute to the military on the eve of the ceremony.

Gina Marie Incandela, an 8-year-old Kissimmee girl diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at age 2, will perform the National Anthem at the prayer breakfast. While coping with her learning disorder, she has become a nationally known performer of inspirational songs and works to change public perception of people with disabilities.

Ybor City, FL - This Saturday, more than 25 artists will gather in Ybor City’s Centennial Park for the inaugural Ybor City Art in the Park event. This celebration of art, music and the holidays will include the works of talented local, regional and national artists, all competing for cash prizes—including awards for first, second, third place and Best in Show.  This juried art show will showcase hundreds of pieces of art from various mediums.
