Florida Orchestra plays totally awesome 80's hits

Tampa, FL -- The Florida Orchestra comes to Tampa playing music from the decade that brought us MTV, big hair, and Michael Jackson’s sequin glove. 

In a salute to some of the best-loved pop and rock artists of the 1980s, the Florida Orchestra will play “like, totally rad” music by Madonna, Michael Jackson, Phil Collins, Prince, Bon Jovi, Cyndi Lauper, Elton John, Peter Gabriel and more.

The orchestra will perform under the baton of conductor Sarah Hicks, whom The New York Times, hailed as "the next generation of up-and-coming American conductors".

Part of her mission is to attract new concertgoers and a younger audience with this type of program.

Tampa, Florida --The Deedle Deedle Dees are coming to the Glazer Children's museum 110  West Gasparilla Plaza in downtown Tampa Friday, May 13 and Saturday, May 14.

Friday, the group performs at 11 a.m. while on Saturday they perform at 11:45 a.m. and 2:15 p.m.

The Deedle Deedle Dees use rock-n-roll, country, hip hop, New Orleans piano music, punk, and folk to teach kids about American history, the natural world, social action, and other cool stuff that they might never have thought about before.

Specializing in music inspired by social studies and American history, the Deedle Deedle Dees know how to make learning through music fun!

Tampa, FL -- The Tampa Museum of Art announced today that it will offer free admission on Wednesday, May 18 as part of the Association of Art Museum Directors’ (AAMD) Art Museum Day. 

Coinciding with International Museum Day, Art Museum Day will also focus on the theme of “museum and memory.” 

AAMD’s Art Museum Day is an opportunity to focus attention on the role of art museums in North America, as part of the International Council of Museums’ (ICOM) global celebration of museums.

Hillsborough students attempt to break Guinness World Record

Hillsborough County, FL -- District orchestra students and teachers will gather at Williams IB Middle Magnet School at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, to attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest string instruments ensemble (violin, viola, cello, bass).

The record represents the greatest number of people playing the same tune on string instruments together at the same time at a single venue. 

Williams music teacher Robert Halczyn is working with Guinness World Records to follow all the required instructions for establishing an official world record. 

Those include submitting clips from local or national news coverage, independent video and still photo evidence, and log books recording the event’s activities.

"Best Bean of the Bay" supports Art for Autism

Tampa, FL --  Local Tampa Bay restaurants will be competing in a cook-off, creating dishes that use coffee and cocoa at this year's "Best Bean of the Bay" to raise money for Art for Autism.

Restaurants, including Seasons 52, Timpano, Fleming's, Cold Stone Creamery and more, will compete in four competition categories: Appetizer, Entree, Dessert, and Cocktail or Beverage.

Celebrity chef Jon Ashton, Hillsborough County Commissioner Ken Hagen, singer Lisa Casalino, and former professional wrestler Randy "Macho Man" Savage will serve on the judges' panel, and Bright House Sports Network reporter Victoria Lim will emcee.
